My Story Book: Adventures and Dreams
An end-to-end mobile app designed to help autistic children express themselves, connect with others, and improve communication skills. Tackling the challenges faced by ASD children in expressing emotions and interpreting social cues, this app provides creative and interactive tools to foster connections.
Background
According to the 2019 CHSCY, 1 in 50 (or 2.0%) Canadian children and youth aged 1 to 17 years were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children with ASD usually have difficulties in social interaction and communication. Their ability to communicate with others can vary substantially from person to person. However, many children with ASD desire friendship and seek opportunities for social interaction.

Problem Statement
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) struggle with expressing their emotions and understanding social cues, such as body language and facial expressions. These difficulties hinder their ability to communicate effectively, form connections, and feel a sense of belonging within their social circles.

My Story Book offers a creative, interactive platform that empowers ASD children to express themselves through storytelling, engage in meaningful social interactions, and practice communication skills using Augmented Reality (AR) technology. The app fosters a supportive environment where children can explore self-expression and connect with peers in a way that feels natural and engaging.

Children with ASD often face communication challenges but have a strong desire to express themselves and engage socially. Peer interactions are crucial for developing their communication skills. Visual arts, like drawing, can support self-expression, while AR technology provides engaging, interactive environments to enhance social skills.

iPad Version
In addition to the mobile app, My Story Book is also available in an optimized iPad version. The larger screen provides an enhanced, immersive experience, making it easier for children to create and explore stories. This version is designed to offer a more engaging and accessible platform for visual storytelling and interactive AR features.
Reflection
Designing My Story Book was a meaningful experience that combined empathy and technology to support autistic children. We learned the value of creating tailored solutions that make communication more accessible and engaging through storytelling and AR. This project emphasized the transformative potential of thoughtful design. We are honored that My Story Book won Third Place in the CreateSC 2023 Design Marathon, reflecting the impact of our efforts.
